What would have happened if Gizmodo had just given it back to Apple?

If you’ve checked the tech blogs lately, they’ve been buzzing about a next generation iphone that came to light after an Apple employee lost the prototype at a bar.  Tech blog, Gizmodo apparently bought the device for $10,000 to take it apart and break the news on it for the sake of a few advertising dollars and a spotlight for a few days on the other tech blogs.

It’s an issue of morality & integrity that I think is unfortunately lost on a lot of our culture.  Apparently Gizmodo is also on the bandwagon of moral degradation too.  But I am curious what would have happened if Gizmodo had just given the device back to Apple instead of knowingly purchase stolen property to exploit?

Now, I have a lot of respect for Apple over their decision to ban porn applications on their app store.  A decision that I think actually embodies the philosophy of Google’s to “not be evil” better than Google has done themselves.  In this they have proven a moral stronghold when they could have easily chosen otherwise.

Bridges torn down instead of built up.

I am not sure what would have actually happened if Gizmodo had just given the device back, but I am sure that bridges would have been been built instead of torn down.  Now you have Cupertino upset over the issue.  Not because their device was leaked, but because of the lack of respect that has been shown them on behalf of the tech blogs in the face of the massive security measures usually taken by Apple to keep things under wraps till a launch date or press conference.

I will admit I am an idealist.  I think a person or company should be respected in regards to information like this.

If the device had been given back, Apple would have taken notice.  I do not think that they would have been left out in the cold either when the device was actually launched.  Apple likes to do things differently which is well-known.  An uncommon company like them would have also probably been uncommonly grateful as well.

Meet the Press.

Gizmodo hasn’t always been the giant tech blog that it is today.  Now it sits in the ranks of TechCrunch, Engadget and Lifehacker with millions of page views every month.  But Gizmodo has made it clear that they are the same caliber of journalists that made us hate printed media, blood-sucking journalists that are out to exploit anyone and anything for the bottom line.  Of course that’s what makes the page views.  That’s what pulls in the advertising dollars.  That’s how you make a name for yourself.  Exploitation.

It’s also why Gizmodo has been deleted from my feedreader as of late as well as other blogs that have done the same thing.

There are a lot of news organizations out there.  There are some really good tech blogs that I still enjoy reading, ones that haven’t “sold out” to get ahead of the game through buying stolen property.  I hope Apple shows grace to you.  I hope forgiveness is a part of their language.  The fact that this was a knowingly unreleased product, any judge in their right mind would rule in their favor, regardless of whether a police report was filed or not.

Why Writing for SEO doesn’t pay anymore…

Over the last few days I’ve started noticing something.

Google has began integrating sites that have been stumbled into their search results. (Update: it’s really a function of the StumbleUpon Toolbar).

Check out the screenshot for the search “creativity” below:

do you notice the little stumbleupon icons with stars?

search for creativityWhat does this mean?

It means that businesses that have built their entire existence on writing for SEO may be doomed in the near future.

Writers also may have to start being more original in their content production.

Creativity pays.

Search engines may have finally figured out that people are the best search tool you have. With social networking we discovered that people are the best way to get a post or idea around the web quickly. Now search engines have finally discovered that its a good way of cutting though the clutter of so many of those spam bots and sploggers out there who make a living off of filling thousands of pages full of ads and keywords.

Even legitimate businesses that are built around keyword advertising may have to pull the plug and start producing original content that aims directly at their market.

How do we respond as bloggers?

Learn and grow. People want good, creative, original content. If you can’t produce this, you will die in this market. There are enough other people who will work their butt of to do what you are too lazy to do and they will be recognized.

iDebt: get one this Christmas!

Steve-Jobs- Dave-Ramsey-credit-cards

Apple recently decided that they aren’t going to accept cash this Holiday Season, well… if you want an iPhone or two (limit two).

Here’s some excerpts of the story that c|net ran:

Would-be iPhone buyers must now present a credit or debit card if they want to take home an iPhone, and they’re also now limited to just two units, as they were on iPhone Day, according to The Associated Press. The AP quoted an Apple representative explaining the move as a way of making sure there are enough iPhones for the holidays and to prevent unauthorized resellers from flooding the market.

and

Before Thursday, when the policy was implemented, you could walk into any Apple store and plunk down cash for up to five iPhones. While the concerns about supply are harder to gauge from a distance, the credit card policy seems designed to make sure buyers leave a paper trail.

Granted, debit cards are accepted instead, but at the price iPhones are running anyway, I’d rather unlock it and sell it on ebay and pay off my student loan than buy one to use.

But, as my mind turns… I’d have to wonder about the exchange that Dave Ramsey and Steve Jobs would have over this one.

Google Grandcentral review.

If google ever actually builds a cell phone they will rule the roost with this service alone.

*embeded button removed*

I recently was invited to take part in the Grandcentral beta testing of Google’s new service.

First of all it’s versatile beyond belief and simple to use. When I signed up, I had to choose a local phone number for me, but there wasn’t one, so I chose the closest one I could.

It’s also built for bloggers.

Let’s move on to some screenshots, eh?

image

The inbox is pretty simple and easy to use. Each Item has a drop down navigation control that will allow you to play each message or interact with it in a variety of ways.

image

You can automatically forward it to an email of choice, reply directly to senders email (if available), make notes on that call. Map the location (if you’ve specified it in their settings), and post the voicemail to a blog or anywhere where you could drop a line of code.

There are also a number of handling options for calls being made. They can ring all numbers at once, and you pick up wherever you want. Also you can route specific callers directly to voicemail or directly to a phone of choice.

Voicemails can then be left on the server or emailed to your location of choice (in my case, my gmail account).

I’m still working around it to figure it all out. I am sure that I will find some more buttons and whistles as I use it more, but it is a product that I am looking forward to using more too.

How to copy movies to your ipod using free software on windows.

State of PlayOkay, I searched high and low for a program that would do this, downloaded spyware junk and some supposed freeware that ended up being some trial version that you have to pay 49.99 for to actually use for anything, and in the end I came up with a solution via lifehacker and this post.

So, in the interest of saving you 49.99 (if you really want to pay that, feel free to send it my way via paypal or to the people at the links mentioned above) here is the answer for copying your dvd over to your video ipod.

First of all, here are the only 2 downloads you will need:

DVD Shrink

Download Handbrake for Windows

Now let’s get down to business:

1. Open Dvdshrink, you will be greeted with a basic looking window such is below:

dvd shrink open

2. Open Disk, here you just choose which drive you are going pull the dvd image from.

choose

your screen will then show the disk structure

disk structure

3. Backup, you will be presented with the option of how you want to accomplish this task and where to save it… choose ISO to keep it all in one file (nice and tidy)

save as iso

It will then start to encode the iso image

dvd shrink encoding

Once it is done encoding, you will be ready for the next part of the process.

4. Open Handbrake, you will immediately be greeted by a dialog asking what your dvd source is:

handbrake open

5. Choose ISO or Folder (depending on how you saved it… I chose ISO for this tutorial, but the option for pulling the data from a local folder is also available), make sure you set your encoder to H.264(ipod) with your width and height at 320×240 and specify a destination folder such as your desktop. Screenshot attached of the settings that work for me below.

it will then start encoding your video

encoding dialog

When it’s done, you can just drag the generated file over to your movies in itunes and synchronize it when you sync your ipod.

The whole process took about 2 hours overall.. but I wasn’t really baby sitting it either. The video I used here was Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring on a 2 ghz dual core Dell Inspiron E1505 running 2gb of Ram, I had a 17 slide graphic intensive presentation running in Impress, a basic document in Writer, doing a post in Blogdesk and Firefox was running in the background.

Update: if you run into a particularly difficult dvd, try the also free DVD Decrypter
