Taking the $100 challenge.

May 27, 2007  |  Uncategorized  |

100-dollar-challenge-logoI’ve decided to take Shai up on her $100 challenge with this site, decloned. I’ve already made that kind of money through selling on ebay. I sold a $15,000 item last year on commission through ebay which rocked. I also run a web business on the side (usually friends and friends of friends only). So I’ve decided to do more here and see what could happen.

Up till last month, I didn’t really bother to monetize this blog. In fact I didn’t bother to do much with it at all. But as I’ve grown more into blogging daily, I’ve revamped the site and decided to make a go of it here on a personal level too. Becca will be joining me on decloned as well so that should make it a little easier.

Now you can go to a variety of sites and get optimization tips for adsense and Amazon and Chitika, but when it comes right down to it, Ads are a necessity of the blogosphere. If you are going to make anything, you are going to have to run ads.

So as I’ve reoptimized decloned for ads, I am now ready to begin the challenge. Right now, I am running both Adsense and Context Link from Amazon.

  1. I’d like to do more to monatize our blogs, William. Most of all, I’d like to deal better with comment spam. I use MT and make use of plug-ins, but not the right ones since I must still go in and delete bunches of comments earmarked as junk. :P Have you used MT? How do you like WordPress compared to it? I’m no CSS wizard so need something simple to tweak.

  2. I am a wordpress fan all-around. The akisment spam feature is the best I’ve ever used. I hate captchas so this was the route for me. I’ve never used MT. Wordpress is what all our blogs with b5 are run on. In fact, we just today hired one of the leading wordpress developers. So, with their expertise on call, I am pretty confident about Wordpress. As for tweaking wordpress, the simplest route is finding a theme you like, then modifying it just a little. I am getting a lot more familiar with CSS but still no expert. I’d be willing to help you guys with monetization, though as of yet, I haven’t had that much success on my own.

  3. Thanks, William. I have thought about using capcha, but I know at least two of my readers are vision-impaired and I don’t want them to have to deal with that. So far neither’s commented, but they might want to sometime. We have about $49 earned via Google AdSense so far, but I know we can do better. Howie’s weight loss links page gets the bulk of our traffic, so that is a page we should hit. I want to keep my Gardenwife blog pretty pared down, just a few links in the sidebar and AdSense at the bottom of archive entries.

  4. I think one thing that is not helping you is that you don’t have RSS feeds on either of your sites (that I can find). These drive a lot of traffic behind a blog. I’ve only just started to monetize decloned again so our adsense pay is right around $37 but the page views are definitely growing.

  5. Yep – you’re added now, William. Good luck!

And WOW on that $15,000 ebay thing. Can you do a guest post on JMMO to tell us the story behind that? ;-)

  6. Update on this. I will have to file taxes on my blog, decloned as I made over $600 on my blog this last year.
